As a one-woman mobile notary business owner in Northern Virginia, my mission is to serve the public by providing reliable, accessible notarization services for important documents. For the past four years, I’ve been handling the closings of real estate transactions for title companies and notarizing estate planning documents and all other types of legal documents. I have always taken my Virginia notary commission and role as a public servant seriously, which means that I prioritize fairness, transparency, and ethical pricing.
Since 2021, I have been using my commission as a full-time notary and have immersed myself in the best training in the country. I started by getting loan signing agent training and certification from the National Notary Association. Next I got another signing agent certification from a program called Notary2Pro. And for the past three years I have been participating in an incredible nationwide training program called Notary Stars. This training offers a buffet of daily, live online classes that keep me sharp and up-to-date on loan products, technology, notary law, and general notary practices. I never miss their weekly Monday evening mentorship sessions, where notaries from all around the country ask questions of the most knowledgeable and experienced trainers there are.
It may not be obvious to the outsider that running a notary business is a surprisingly costly endeavor. Some of these costs include errors and omissions insurance, monthly software costs, monthly website maintenance fees, marketing costs, training programs and seminar fees, annual NNA exam and background check, office supplies (high-speed printer, scanner, and other office supplies), monthly online listing fees, and certification costs. The costs of travel and auto maintenance are also significant expenses, and it’s crucial that my fees reflect the costs of providing this service. While many notaries add fees for urgent, after-hours, or hospital visit services, I’ve been hesitant to do so and I recognize that these additional services require more time, travel, and availability. Setting fair, modest fees for these situations could help cover those expenses without compromising my commitment to ethical pricing.
I aim to strike a balance between offering fair and honest pricing and ensuring that I can continue to provide a high-quality, convenient service.
